Virdi, I agree that reservation can't be taken up at all levels - especially when it comes to higher education and certain special fields like medicine. Also caste based reservation seemes too biased these days.
But still Virdi, your last statement seemed too harsh. Well just take the case of people around you - may be your watchman's daughter or your maid's son. What are the chances that they would clear the 12th standard? Remember - they cannot afford tuitions, guides other even basic facilities which you and I might have access to. So would a 70% scored by such child deemed below par than the 80% scored by you or me?
I understand that the government still has a big role to play. You talk about 60 years but what is 60 years to some people when even today they cannot afford a square meal a day?
The anguish seems reasonable because we tend to see the elite/creamy layers but they are again those numerous people (from upper/middle/lower castes) who still need uplifment.

Firstly... I have studied in IIT and I know what the SC & ST students are... The self confidence is low and believe me they also do bad in the studies... I was bad too but there was not a single SC & ST guy who was great or within 10 % of the class... It means even after that guy's dad and mom taking advantage of the quota didnt really help him in becoming intelligent...
Secondly... Its personal now against the government of India... My younger brother got 96 % in 10th standard... He is now in 12th standard... and he deserves to get into IIT... He is working his ass off everyday so that he can get through JEE... If some mother fucker SC, ST or OBC gets through by getting lesser marks than my brother then I would first kill the mother fucker and then the Prime Minister of India...

Even before all the agitations and protests have been addressed, these politicians seem to have jumped into a hasty decision. What I don't get is why they are digging their own political grave. Mandal I was thought of the worst possible bill to be raised back then and now they are passing Mandal II? Its easy to sit in our homes and lambast these people. Its now even commonplace to join rallies and protests. But to what effect? Seems like water rolling off a duck's back. Its astounding that they would choose to turn a blind eye to the goings on and to the future citizens of this country.
no quota at all is a bit too radical for India. n its not the student's fault that the parents can't afford his/her education. so m all for economic quota..at least for this generation. n the next too. that will give them enuff opportunities to make money for their chillun n ultimately, help the govt wipe out this rabid quota system.
n i know what you mean by the SC/STs not making the grade..literally. i studied in the univ...the SC/STs in my class had more money than the whole of yugoslavia. n the IQ of a shoelace. it was a bloody shame that they had pinched seats from an economically backward OC student with more brains n marks that their extended family!

just a bit of introspection. Seetaram yechuri asks a doctor "It is the same government that helped you become doctor. what are u agitating for?" and the doctor replies"You forgot even before becoming a doctor my vote made u a politician" - these guys lost that self consciousness--- I PITY INDIA
I am amazed how easily politicians say "seats can be increased". Being at IITK i could feel the pressure on the authorities to provide best of infrastruture to students. AND MIND U IITS AND IIMS ARe NOT RUN ON THE MONEY GOVT GIVES they are run by the CONTRIBUTIONS from ALUMNI. These bastards should realize that.

correct me if i am wrong. let us start with a IIM with 300 seats.
1) 49.50% reservation for all other then the general - No of seats left - 150
2)I am sure i met so many SCs / ST / OBC guys who are damn intelligent and do well and they dont want to use seat from reservation - assume them to be 2% of 150 left seats(pessimistic) - No of seats left -147
3) 33% for Women out of 300(God i donno if its implemented - I am sure Sonia Gandhi will get this Idea next time Mujra happens in Rae Bariely) - No of seats left - 147-99 =48
4)I am sure some NRIs should be filled in as some money is needed - 2% of 300 - No of seats left - 48-6=42
5)Some sports / physically handicapped etc etc.( If not included) - 2% - No of seats left - 40 (FORTY)
NOW CMON YOU 200000 general category INDIANS fight out for 40 available seats and i am sure Arjun Singh will help you..
My sincere suggestion to Arjun Singh ---why dont you start a RESERVED IIM or IIT so taht u still get votes, they still get seats and THE QUALITY still SURVIVES.
I wish MANMOHAN SINGH would have got kicked out of Oxford because the Seats were not reserved for SARDARS!!!!!

And you really think quota would help?? I had got 90 percentile in my GATE few years back and I was the 7th ranker for admission into M.Pharm, out of 8 seats allotted to "open category" people. I did not get into the field of my choice and this girl from Reserved category, was given admission first barring all of us who just kept looking. Do you know how much that girl had got? 55 percentile!
If they need upliftment..they could try on their own merit and not on other;s merit!

For an SC/ST/OBC batsman the 30 yard circle should be considered a boundary.
An SC/ST/OBC batsman scoring 70 be given a century status
An SC/ST/OBC fielder be allowed to take a catch on one bounce.
An SC/ST/OBC bowler be allowed to chuck.
An SC/ST/OBC bowler will be given 2 xtra fielders.
And the national team must have atleast 2 SC/ST/OBC batsmen and
2 SC/ST/OBC bowlers and 1 SC/ST/OBC alrounder!
Let's promote them in sports also.

Well even I hate reservation and arjun singh but u shudn't atleast curse the SC, ST's and OBC's. You never complained when ur forefathers reaped the bendfits of being feudal/zamindaars. The atrocities that the so called society structure put on the SC/STs/OBCs.
So cry foul now when its your turn to get stuffed. Instead why not question the prevailing condtion in society.
While 50% reservation is not solution and reservation alone cannot be the solution, something or anything being done in the right direction will be some help.

I am anon1. 60 years is nothing when compared to the thousands years of Manu's caste system.
Let me cite an example.
I take it that you are a sikh. How old is the sikhism? One of the best thing about sikhism was that there is no caste/class system as it existed in Hindus and Muslims. Everyone was supposed to be equal.
But even after more than 400 humdred year since Guru Nanak ji, we still have the same old caste system in sikhs, don't we. Even today in our Punjab we have the caste problems.
Symbols like 5 K are followed by all the sikhs, but the basic principals, that's only for the Holy Guru Granth sahib, so that we can recite it.
Go ahead and deny it if you have the balls otherwise kiss your mom's sweet ass.

What I was trying to say was 60 years is not a enough time for us to become a scoiety of equals. Have you ever been to any village in India to see the condtion people live in.
And do you really think that the economic and social condtions of a person doesn't affect his chances of growth.
In all seriousness, while reservation is like plucking the leaves of a big tree to cut the tree, it is still better than doing nothing.
In my view, the root problem is a good portion of our population not having access to good nutritios food, primary education, and primary health. Political abuse of caste and class is another problem.
How can one blame/curse the SC/ST/OBC for the social inequality they have been facing since ages.
And no, I am not from the either of the quota classes.
