It is Time!!!

I have been working like an ass from 10 in the morning to 12 in the night. Personal life is screwed, fooding habbits are really bad, boss expects me to work harder, friends asking me "where the duck have you been", want to meet someone but sometime I don't have time and sometimes she is really busy. When is it time to say enough is enough, I will work the way I want to work??
People in western world never work so hard. Is it because India is still a developing nation and most of the things which we do depends or is linked to the west?? Be it market research or IT solutions or consulting or manufacturing, most of the clients are from the West. They don't work as hard as we do, believe me they don't. The whole of France goes on a summer vacation in July and August. When will we understand that the US of A is just another country like Sri Lanka or Chile?? When will we say Indians need not work for some western country?? I guess the time is coming very soon.
One thing which I can see is the people opting for call center jobs for US clients would decrease. With the sensex crossing 9000 points, foreign investments in Indian markets, manufacturing getting a boost, high growth in agriculture, high growth in mining and a great monsoon, the economy is bound to go up and people will tend to spend more and more. That means more people will get employed for providing services to these customers or shift jobs from the stupid shitty night call center thing to the day jobs of providing guidence and assistance to these new customers.
Another thing which I can see is that western economy is dependent on the growth on India and China, it is time when we arm twist the wester manufacturers and tell them "Ok boss this is it, we can provide this to you. You take it or we can start selling our products in Asia." India is now a healthy wealthy and w9ise economy. :-)
Oh before I forget. I love the song "The Reason" from the band called "Hoobastank" and this is for "The One" and for no one else. :-) Download it here.

I agree that people in Asia seem to work harder. My work hours are ridiculous. 8:15 am to 6:03 pm. And the ridculous part is not just the '03' after 6 pm!

I'm used to it now, but I wish I didn't have to get up at 6 am every day to make it to work on time... that too when my flatmates are sleeping like kumbhus! :(

Hmmm...sorry Virdi. Yeah it is tough....& I sure don't know how it is in India....I have been away so long. But can I express something here about what I have been seeing in the States..

I am not an expert at this...but perhaps the perception of US is different from the outside? I see things around me, and it is far from "laidback". Way far. I read that Americans working harder and longer hours has become quite common. Mealtimes are rushed, sleeping hours are reduced. I think as compared to European countries, work here in America pushes us people way too hard. Plus, there's no job security so it puts a lot of fear in people. They have got to put their noses to the grind. It's just too much. Everything for everyone revolves around work.

I remember...not too long ago, driving 2 hours to get to my Internship place in the city each morning. I would leave at 530am, the sky still being dark outside. And I remember being very surprised to see the highway full of traffic! It was just weird or surreal seeing a line of lights....on my lane as well as the opposite lane, in that darkness. I remember just feeling a sense of sadness or appreciation for everyone...thinking that gosh! people are working HARD. And that I am not the only one waking up and getting ready alone..

I think working long hours has become quite an epidemic in certain nations unfortunately. Really, it's terrible! Life's not all about work. And we are not machines. Making us people run on low is far from wise.

:-( Sorry, I felt like expressing what was on my mind, according to what I have observed here.

PS: Sooooooory for the long post
:-)

Ah well... my 2 cents, is that given the competition for jobs in India, people work hard in fear of being replaced. Yes it will change with development, but slowly. Very slowly.

PS: If there's one country which is more hardworking than India, then its HK :( :(

Nandita>> Keep ur bum ready for the kicks and face ready for the cake to be splashed on it... ;-)

Harshi>> well I wanted to just say that we as Indians should see the US of A as just another country and not as GOD of all GODs!!

well about driving I would say you chose it... you could have lived some place close by... anyway people in Bombay travel that much and more everyday... and that time is not being used productively for the progres of the person and country as whole... Logistic Problem my Prof would say.. ;-)

and this is for your long comment... Thhhrrrrrrbbbbbbrrrrrrtttt!!!!

Casa>> Billions of jobs in India today... Billions... people in B'lore change jobs after 3 months...

Hong Kong the name itself suggests King Kong.. (what am I blaberring??) hehehe..

Yeah, USA should not think it's God. Bilkul. But bas wohi ke, yahan log bahaut mehnat karte hain yaar. Yeh maine dekha hai.

My point was not about "driving" that distance Virdi (I had to, because I had my reasons), it was about that pre-dawn rush-hour work traffic that I was a part of en-route.

Anyway, sorry to hear of your workload :-(

Btw, I wasn't sure whether we could really hear that song you put up??? Or were you kidding? :-) Maine song sun liya. Sorry! Lovely number. Quite a touching song.

Hi there,I agree about the crazy working hours in India. But Indians abroad are doing the same. They work as many crazy hours.I do believe its in our blood.Kaam khatam kar ke ghar jao!
You know the desi babu culture, 5'oclock lets go home.I have seen it amongst caucasians, believe it or not even doctors.Never mind work..5 it is and they will leave and it will be some poor Asian trudging along, all in the name of ethics, duty and blah.More than anything I think its the attitude change that is requiured..

Oh Virdi,
Donno about Industries, but Grad students dont have a life. They extract our juice and squeeze us like a dried orange skin. Also, I think you cannot generalize who works more than whom? Talk about Govt. of India.Every where people have deadlines.

Well your day sounds better than mine. Mine starts at 7am and goes on till 1am the next morning!!
I think if you are in IT, it is like that. And I don't think it is more relaxed in the West- maybe in Europe it is. In North America its all the same. Sometimes I wonder why I didn't become something like a receptionist or an administrative assistant. Their lives are the usual 9-5s and after that they are free. No tension!! Sigh!! Now its too late

Your work timing is really harsh but i guess it depends on industry we work in, i think we do have regulation of 9 working hours, more than that would be considered abuse. Japanese & south Koreans work harder than us, what ever insignificant work they do everyone of them see it as contribution to their country's growth. Even though our economy is growing, we or anyone else would never be in a situation to dictate terms in a free economy, if not us then they will always be other options, until we shift our focus from service to innovation. In USA too people in computer gaming industry have very harsh work hours, they literally live in their office, again it depends from industry to industry i guess.

People in western world never work so hard. - I don't think that's true. We have been putting in 10 hrs a day for the last couple of years. Some of my managers send e-mails at like 3 am.

Anonymous said...

Sweeping statement or what :) Can someone please tell my boss that since I work in the west I am not meant to be working all hours that God sends. Seriously, your statement ain't true in a lot of accounts. Have come across plenty of IT/Telecom Contractors in India who do just 9 to 5, the job market is good over there and they know that. And to add to it my counterparts in India get percentage pay rises about 5 to 10 times more than I do. But I am not complaining :)
